A Brief History of Rayon
Rayon has a fascinating history as one of the earliest man-made textile fibers. Developed from regenerated cellulose in the late 19th century, it was initially marketed as “artificial silk” because of its smooth hand, lustrous appearance, and ability to drape beautifully. The viscose process was patented in the 1890s, and the material became commercially important in the early 20th century. By 1924, the name “rayon” had become established in the United States, and its affordability helped bring silk-like fabrics to a much wider audience. Today, rayon remains valued for its soft touch, cool feel, and elegant drape — qualities that make it particularly well suited to relaxed shirts.
