Timeworn Clothing / At Last & Co / Butcher Products
Kei Hemmi is the Founder and Creative Director of "TIMEWORN CLOTHING", as well as the creator of two other labels under the same umbrella: "AT LAST & CO" which specializes in workwear, including renowned denim products, and "BUTCHER PRODUCTS" which offers Military and Sportswear inspired items. In 1997, he co-founded "TENDERLOIN" with Toru Nishiura.
Hemmi, Nishi, and Mano have shared a long-standing friendship that has withstood the test of time. Despite their varied life experiences and challenges to societal norms, their bond remains strong. They have each lived in different countries, yet their friendship endures. This enduring connection is a testament to the depth of their relationship and the value they place on their shared history.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Tokyo, specifically Shibuya and Harajuku, played a significant role in shaping street fashion. This area served as a hub for various subcultures and movements, which coexisted and influenced each other.
The 'Amekaji' style, a Tokyo interpretation of American and American Indian influences, was embraced by three friends who were deeply immersed in its aesthetic. Inspired by workwear, denim, leather, military, Native American, sportswear, and motorbikes, this style reflected a wide range of American influences. With a keen eye for detail and a natural sensibility, the Japanese designers behind 'Amekaji' brought a unique perspective to the fashion world.
The experiences and antics of the three individuals, along with their immediate friends, during that exciting time ultimately served as invaluable life lessons that would greatly influence their future endeavors.
Kei decided to leave school as soon as he could, eager to explore the world beyond the classroom. He wasn't the best student, but he was full of curiosity and excitement for the things that interested him. Without the luxury of the internet or mobile phones, he spent his days immersing himself in the vibrant culture of Shibuya and Harajuku, indulging in his love for fashion, motorcycles, and music. Life was a whirlwind of fun and mischief, and Kei wouldn't have had it any other way.
The initial meetings between Hemmi, Nishi, and Mano have left a lasting impression on Hemmi's memory. Despite the inevitable conflicts that arose during their sensitive youth, these encounters have become significant and memorable experiences for Hemmi.
"When I was a kid, flight jackets (B-3) were only worn by vintage clothing shop employees and individuals who were well-versed in fashion trends. However, Mano stood out by confidently sporting his B-3 jacket, Levis jeans, Engineer Boots, and Teardrop sunglasses. With his slicked-back hair and carrying a Double Bass on his shoulder, Mano exuded a cool and confident attitude that set him apart."
"The first time I met Nishi, I was just chilling and smoking a cigarette when I saw this dude strolling by in some Goro’s accessories, Levis Big E jeans, and Engineer Boots. " It wasn’t a common style back then, but he was rocking it. " My buddy Takeshi had mentioned this cool guy named Nishi in the neighborhood, so I shouted out to him and it was him! We hit it off right away and spent hours talking about everything under the sun - movies, music, bikes, fashion. It was like we had known each other for ages. Good times."
In those days, Hemmi was just trying to make ends meet. Life was a cycle of working odd jobs, paying bills, and trying to stay afloat. It was tough, but Hemmi kept pushing through. Looking back now, Hemmi can see how that monotony fueled a desire for something more. It was a tough time, but it also lit a fire under Hemmi to break free from the cycle and strive for something better.
So, he met his girlfriend who was heading back to London and thought, "Why not take a chance?" He had nothing to lose and was curious about what life in London would be like. Here's to new beginnings!
Life in London
Although he didn't know it at the time, he was in for the surprise of his life.
"Little did I know, London had a surprise in store for me. As I struggled to adjust to this new life, something amazing was brewing just around the corner. The challenges I faced only made the rewards that much sweeter in the end. And looking back now, I wouldn't change a thing. London may have been tough at first, but it ended up being one of the most rewarding experiences of my life."
"Those first few years were tough. The language barrier was no joke. But you know what helped me get through it? Going to the flea markets and getting lost in all the amazing vintage clothes. Just seeing all those unique pieces made me forget about everything else for a while. It was my little escape."
Despite facing challenges, his determination and the opportunity to shape his own future kept him going. He reflected on how he lacked this motivation in Tokyo but found it in this new experience. Grateful for the lessons learned, he discovered a newfound focus that he was determined to hold onto.
After a few years, even though his English was still a work in progress, he began making friends who shared his interests. Through them, he discovered his passion for tattoos. One of his first tattoos was done by Luke Atkinson from Checker Demon Tattoos during a trip to Germany. Good times, good memories.
The Spirit of Timeworn Clothing
In 2010, Kei Hemmi started his passion project, "TIMEWORN CLOTHING," where he poured his heart into creating quality garments that he would want to wear for years to come. Through his experience, he discovered that the most important thing for him was the lasting connection he felt with a piece, even as it aged and wore down. Now, he aims to share that special feeling with his customers, offering timeless pieces that will stand the test of time.
Time keeps moving forward, but Hemmi, Nishi, and Mano are still tight as ever. We may not see each other as much as we used to, but when we do, it's like no time has passed at all. Our friendship is solid, and we always manage to have a good laugh whenever we catch up.
"I'm so grateful that we all still get to do what we love with so much enthusiasm, even after all these years. It's truly a blessing."

As the conversation with Hemmi winds down, he suddenly becomes nostalgic, picking up a vintage fabric swatch from his bookshelf. His smile is infectious as he talks passionately about the integrity of the fabric - the weave, fibers, and drape. It's clear that his love for his craft runs deep. We feel privileged to have had a glimpse into his world and his unwavering dedication to his art.
