About " Polartec "
The company that developed the well-known fleece material, started out as a textile factory called Malden Mills in Malden, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. They were involved in the production of wool coats and military uniforms. As times changed, so did the materials they worked with, shifting from natural wool to synthetic polyester fibers.
In 1981, Yvon Chouinard visited the headquarters with the idea of creating a "synthetic pile sweater" that would be ideal for outdoor activities. The company embarked on a joint development project to find the perfect material for this purpose. Eventually, they successfully created the polyester fleece and named it "Synchilla." When it was released in 1985, Synchilla became wildly popular.
Instead of patenting their invention, Polartec decided to openly share the sales rights worldwide, leading to a fleece boom. In 1991, Malden Mills officially registered the name "Polartec" for their fleece products. However, tragedy struck in 1995 when a fire destroyed the entire company. Despite losing everything, they managed to rebuild and refocus their business on textile production.
In the 2000s, the company changed its name to Polartec LLC and continued to develop various innovative materials. They maintain strong relationships with renowned outdoor brands and the military. Polartec's commitment to quality and performance remains unwavering, making them a trusted outdoor material.
