The Alden Shoe Company invented the tassel loafer after World War II at the request of Paul Lukas, who was a well-known and debonair actor. Mr. Lukas, who appeared in films like "The Lady Vanishes" and "Watch on the Rhine," asked custom shoemakers in New York and Los Angeles to devise a version of a shoe he had brought from Europe that had little fringed tassels on the ends of the laces.
The two shoemakers both showed the design to the Alden company, which drastically modified it, using the tassels as ornaments on a moccasin-style shoe. The earliest tasseled loafers were two-toned (usually with white top panels), and they were originally popular in Hollywood. The classic style was first produced in 1952. In 1957, Brooks Brothers added a version of Alden's shoe to its stores, fixing the tasseled loafer's image as the shoe of the country-club set.

Alden shoes are crafted with and attention to detail in their Massachusetts factory. They are still using some old machines from decades ago even over 100 years old, , only for keeping the beautiful traditional classic details as seen in the good old days.
It's important to note that due to the handmade process, some minor imperfections may occur because they're not bench made by high tech modern machines with that high precision. These imperfections are a part of the unique character of the shoes and should not be seen as flaws. Just like our feet, no two shoes are exactly the same and perfect.
If you have any concerns about quality control, we're more than happy to provide pictures before you make a purchase. We want to ensure that you're completely satisfied with your Alden shoes.
