Freewheelers “Steelbackers” Work Coat

FREEWHEELERS

$445.00

From Freewheelers' "UNION SPECIAL OVERALLS" line comes the “Steelbackers” Work Coat, inspired by simplified wartime workwear of the 1940s.

During World War II, material rationing and government regulations affected nearly every industry, including clothing and work garments. Manufacturers were required to reduce material usage and simplify garment construction. This work coat recreates the practical, stripped-down design philosophy of that era.

The name "Steelbackers" is a Freewheelers-coined term referring to tough industrial laborers, such as steelworkers and other heavy-duty tradesmen.

The coat is constructed from Freewheelers' original 11.5 oz indigo denim, developed specifically for the brand. The warp yarns are made from long, thick fibers rope-dyed in a rich reddish-black indigo, while the weft yarns incorporate natural nep fibers, creating a distinctive vintage texture and character.

Details include:

  • Four-button front closure
  • Iron laurel-wreath buttons throughout
  • Simple square patch pockets at the waist
  • Union label sewn inside the left pocket
  • Iron laurel-wreath cuff buttons

To further capture authentic wartime workwear construction, Freewheelers uses a combination of thread colors rather than the typical all-natural stitching. Certain areas are sewn with olive-colored thread, a detail commonly found on original work jackets from the period.

The result is a rugged, historically inspired work coat that combines wartime utility, vintage industrial styling, and Freewheelers' renowned attention to period-correct details.
