This release is the irregular, final edition of the WWII jeans model, capturing a unique transitional moment in history — just after the war’s end, when material restrictions were still in effect but original specifications were beginning to return.

During WWII (starting with Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941), even the American mainland experienced price controls and material rationing. Jeans production was no exception. What are now known as “WWII Models” were born out of this environment of regulation and scarcity, resulting in unique, sometimes improvised details and construction combinations — which today make these jeans especially collectible and historically significant.

By May 1945, material controls began to ease in the U.S. However, simplified wartime specs (SIMPLEFIED details) persisted for a few more months. Some jeans produced during this time featured a mash-up of both wartime and peacetime characteristics — essentially, hybrid models.

This 1945 model is exactly that — an irregular transitional piece that attempted to return to pre-war specifications while still under some wartime restrictions.

  • Pocket bags made from lightweight denim (instead of flannel or herringbone) — a holdover from wartime material restrictions

  • Crotch rivet (crutch rivet) reintroduced — reflecting the return to pre-war construction

    Developed by Freewheelers specifically for the Vanishing West line, this is a deep indigo, rope-dyed, WWII-era denim. The brand refused to compromise on wartime weight restrictions, even slightly increasing the ounce weight and using thicker warp yarns, resulting in a more rugged and durable fabric.
