What Bespoke Really Means: Inside the W.W.CHAN Trunk Show

Posted by BROGUE on October 28, 2026

Last week, W.W.CHAN spent three days in our San Carlos store for a bespoke and made-to-measure trunk show. The recap of those three days is one story. This is the other one: what bespoke actually means, why it is different from buying a suit off the rack, and what happens between the first measurement and the finished garment.

Bespoke and Made-to-Measure Are Not the Same Thing

The two terms get used interchangeably, and they should not be. Made-to-measure starts from an existing pattern — a proven block — and adjusts it to your measurements and choices: the cloth, the lapel, the buttons, the pockets. It is a big step up from ready-to-wear, because the garment is made for you and only you.

Bespoke goes further. There is no block. A pattern is cut for one person, from their measurements and their posture, and the garment is built up through fittings. That is why bespoke takes longer and costs more: you are not adjusting a shape, you are creating one. W.W.CHAN offers both, and part of the trunk show is figuring out, with each customer, which route fits what they actually need.

It Starts with Standing Still

The first appointment is mostly measuring, and mostly standing still while someone else looks at you properly. Chest, shoulder, sleeve, back, waist — but the numbers are only half of it. A tailor watches how you stand: whether one shoulder sits lower than the other, whether your back curves a little, how your arms hang. Two people with the same chest measurement can need completely different jackets, and this is where the difference is decided.

Then Comes the Cloth

Choosing cloth is not a footnote; it is half the commission. The bunches come out on the table, and the customer handles them — weight, pattern, drape. A heavier cloth holds a sharper shoulder. A softer one moves more easily but needs a different cut. The tailor's job here is to steer: to match the cloth to the customer's life, not just to their taste in the moment. A suit for daily wear and a suit for occasional evenings are different garments, even in the same color.

The Basted Fitting Is Where the Suit Is Made

At the next trunk show visit — the garment comes back in a rough state: basted together with white thread, chalk marks everywhere, seams left open. This is the most important fitting, and the least photogenic, which is exactly why it matters. The tailor checks the shoulder line, the drape of the back, the balance of the jacket front to back. A pinch here, a let-out there — adjustments that look tiny in the mirror are the difference between a jacket that fits and a jacket that belongs to you.

Why a Trunk Show, and Why Here

W.W.CHAN is based in Hong Kong. Without a trunk show, getting measured by them means flying there. The show brings the tailor to the customer instead — same measurements, same cloth books, same fittings, in our store in San Carlos. It also means the tailor sees you in the context of your actual wardrobe: the shoes you wear, the shirts you like, the way you dress on an ordinary day. That context shapes better decisions than any order form.

Close attention during a fitting

None of this is fast, and none of it is cheap. That is the point. A bespoke garment is not a purchase so much as a record of a person's measurements, posture, and taste at a particular moment — made by hand, fitted more than once, and built to be worn for years rather than a season.

The orders from this show are now being made. If you missed it and want to know when W.W.CHAN returns to the store, get in touch with us and we will let you know.
